HELP HELP HELP,
I thought I was doing the right thing by keeping my rifles in gun socks in the safe. But after getting them out yesterday t3 of them had the gun sock stuck to the buttplates and rusted something terrible. It was my Model 63, Trapdoor Springfield, and 30-40 Krag. No other part of the rifles were rusted. I had them in that safe before with no sock and never got any rust.
My first question is how do I getr the rust off. Or do I get new buttplates. The rust on the Krag is bad.
Was keeping them in the socks bad? I thought the socks were treated. Should I have sprayed the socks with something.
I also put a rubber mat in the bottom of the gun safe in case there was something on the carpet.
Any help would really be great. thanks.

Yea...keeping them in the socks was bad.

Depending on what environment you live in, all the socks did was hold any moisture in the safe to the firearm. Same situation with the clamshell cases that firearms ship in...pistol or rifle.

The sponge like materials in them also hold moisture to the metal....

Doesn't you safe have a plug in dehumidifier...!?

Thanks for the help. I have one of those moisture removers. I put it in the over every couple of months. And funny thing I just got that about the same time I put socks on all my rifles. I have had the safes for 9 years and never a rust issues until the socks. Thought I was doing good. Anyone else had or having this issue. thanks!!!

I purchased a Colt 1911 32-20 revolver that had been stored in a sock. Had light rust on the cylinder and below on the side that was down.

The rubber mat is the likely culprit as there would be no air movement. The sock, if cotton, is not too good either as cotton would absorb any moisture and it would tend toward the bottom where the rubber mat would hold it. Just my thought!

I have had good luck with WD40 and a brass brush for rust. Good Luck!
