So I'm jonesing for a 45/70 lever action Winchester. I know nothing about these rifles and would appreciate your advise. I guess I`d like a vintage one but maybe not. Would just be used to make loud noises at the range and if I'm ever lucky enough to blast a few pigs in half.

I have an older Model 1886 in .45-70.Bagged my first deer with it ,many years ago.

Winchester has new versions of the 1886 .45-70 available now as well.

The .45-70 is a great old cartridge.Even more interesting if you get into hand loading, as there are many components and much load data available for it.

Was there a reason you decide you would like to have a .45-70?

Well I always wanted a Marlin .444 but somehow the history of the Winchester and the 45/70 appeals to me. No practical reason really.
So are they all black powder? or do the new ones use modern powder?

No you can use smokeless powder in the .45-70, even the old ones. The factory loaded .45-70 shells use smokeless powder, but the factory loads are keep low in pressure so they can be used in older firearms, in good condition.

My first deer was bagged with an old Model 1886 .45-70 using factory loaded smokeless powder ammunition.

The old Model 1886 rifles were made in the United States. The new ones are Made in Japan.
