Looking through the 2017 Winchester Repeating Arms Catalog I was surprised that I couldn't find any Model 70 rifles chambered for 223 Remington for 2017. I'm a Winchester fan and was contemplating adding a rifle of this caliber to my cabinet and was shocked to see this popular cartridge missing from their list of available chamberings. I really would have liked to see a M70 in 221 Fireball as most of the shooting I do just doesn't need the velocity of a 22-250 Rem or the 243 Win. a 221 Fireball would be the perfect cartridge for me without the headaches of the 22 Hornet (which I have and use the most).

Greenjoytj, what headaches do you have with the Hornet? I have 2 both of a another brand but I've had zero problems.

Hornet Headachs:
The 2 piece bolt in my Ruger K77 causes uneven case stretch, bases of fired cases look very slightly crooked.
Lil'Gun powder makes wonderful high velocity and low velocity all in the same 10 shot string making the extreme spreads about 150fps. I could try another powder and I will when I use up the Lil'Gun.

The exclusion of the .223 Remington in the Model 70 is one of the poorest marketing mistakes. I asked Ten Model 70 veterans what would they most like to add three years ago and again asked this year. 6.5 Creedmore was number one requested three years ago! Winchester answered! This years results even surprised me! I thought it would be one of the hot new rounds. No! It was firmly .223 Remington. Why that round I asked? Because we like the round for target, plinking, and truck gun use around farms and ranch! Why dosen’t Winchester do this I asked. Answer? Because they see so many sales in assault type rifles and feel the market is saturated there. All said....We disagree!

I asked about .22 Hornet. All replied “Try to buy .22Hornet today! Kittery Trading Post had No .22 Hornet ammo in stock! Reloaders do not favor .22Hornet. Bring back the .223, I will buy two
Model 70s in this caliber

A current GunBroker Auction is for a Model 70 in .223 Remington with a Featherweight Brown Laminate stock. It was the most photographed rifle on GunBroker! Also a LOT of bids! Imagine the popularity if this rifle were reintroduced! It was a pretty rifle! And extremely accurate. Introduced with a 1 in 8inch twist? Off the chart sales!!!
