I am getting a model 94 in 38-55 out of CA gun jail tomorrow. It has never been fired but does not have the box or paperwork to go with it. This is the Legendary Frontiersman with a serial number of LF4XXX out of 19,999. I bought from a local shop for a very decent price which also included a 100 rounds of ammo. I ordered 20 more from CTD at $2.70 a round. I have two .45 Kimber 1911s, three Ruger Vaquero 45 LCs, 2 Colt 5.56s an M1 .30 carbine so I shoot often.

The question for the new year is should I shoot it or make it a safe queen? I am leaning towards shooting it because I did not buy it as an investment. It is just such a cool gun!

Thoughts?

If you don't have the box and all the original paperwork go and shoot it. Commemorative collectors want all the original packaging on the lower priced commemoratives. If it was a higher priced one, such as the John Wayne, I would probably not shoot it.

$2.70 each for 38-55. I'm stunned!!!! I had a M94 custom built into a 38-55 hunting rifle for use with cast bullets and it is a fantastic shooter; but $2.70 each for factory ammo??? Must be using silver bullets from the Lone Rangers mine.
You will like the 38-55 chambering, especially if you hand load. Congratulations on a good buy!!! Except for CTD.

Thanks for the information. When I bought the gun from my local dealer, I received 50 rounds of 38-55 bonded and 50 rounds of cast bullets with an end cartridge marking of W W on top and 38-55 on bottom. Thoughts on who the manufacturer might be and manufacturing dates? I think it is Winchester Western (Olin) out of IL

I also just received 20 rounds of Buffalo Bore Heavy 38-55 Winchester Ammo - 255 gr. J.F.N. Bonded Core .377dia.(1,950fps/M.E.2,153 ft.lbs.) Marked 11C on the box and according to specs it is the 255 gr.

Thoughts on these loads? I just want to shoot a few rounds this weekend to get the feel of the gun. I have never shot a 38-55 before.

Don't know about the cast bullet loads, could be low pressure cowboy loads, could be somebody else's hand loads. I never shoot other peoples hand loads, I'll buy them if the price is right and pull them apart and salvage the components for my own hand loads. WW is winchester out of East Alton, but are they new or are they somebody's concoction? If you cannot positively I.D. them then they must be considered unsafe for you and your gun.
The Buffalo Bore; you know it, so it is good, the rest is up to you.
