Model 1895 Teddy Roosevelt’s Big Medicine

Winchester 1895 First Model Experimental Rifle .30 US unserialized mfg 1896 - TC Johnson patent bottom unloading prototype and listed on Page 56 as #296 of Win Reference Collection book. No receiver or tang markings, buckhorn rear & early pinned-blade front sight. Magazine, lever, crescent buttplate, and screws remain in the white, unpolished. Receiver and bolt retain 97% original brilliant blue, barrel 98% bright blue, walnut stocks retain almost all of their original varnish finish; vivid case colors remain on hammer & extractor, bore appears to be unfired.

No provisions for a rear barrel or receiver sight (no rear sight dovetail), pinned-blade front sight with large ramp. 99% original bright blue remains on receiver, mag and barrel; walnut stocks retain almost all of their original varnish finish; vivid case colors remain on hammer & extractor w/faded case colors on crescent buttplate; bore is excellent.

Winchester 1895 Deluxe First Model Rifle .30 US s/n 65 mfg 1895 - 28" round barrel, fancy checkered walnut pistol grip stock w/rubber shotgun buttplate, factory oval silver-plated plate in stock with monogram "J.A.M.G.", coin silver rocky mountain front sight, sling swivels. Rifle retains 85% original blue, and most of the original piano finish remain on stocks.

Winchester 1895 U.S.-Marked Musket .30 US caliber s/n 18689 mfg 1898 - 28” round barrel; musket-style graduated rear sight; ramp style front sight with pinned steel blade; dense straight-grain walnut stocks w/carbine buttplate & trap door; full forend w/upper hand guard; U.S.-marked on top of receiver; K.S.M. (Kelly S. Morse) government inspector markings on barrel, forend, hammer, lever, trigger link and buttplate; rarely seen patent date marking on left side of receiver (correct for this serial range). Receiver retains 80% blue turning a smooth patina; barrel retains 90% blue thinning at the muzzle; mag, lever & buttplate retain 70% finish, stock remain in very good condition with minor dings and mars. An order for 10,000 model 1895 muskets was ordered by the Army on May 3, 1898, at a cost of $207,000. Only 100 of these muskets saw service in the Philippines, shipped from San Francisco in September of 1899 and were issued to the 33 rd Volunteer Infantry for testing. Sometime in 1900, they were returned to the US and were sold to a Boston arms dealer who presumably disposed of them on the commercial market. The remaining 9,900 muskets were purchased by the M. Hartley Company and most of them were eventually shipped to Cuba in 1906.

Winchester 1895 Deluxe Second Model Rifle .38-72 WCF s/n 20510 mfg 1899 - Part round full-matted barrel; Lyman 21-WR receiver sight, barrel blank in rear seat; fancy checkered walnut stocks; shotgun butt w/hard rubber butt plate. Receiver retains 90% receiver blue w/partial flaking on right side; 95% barrel blue; bright shiny bore. In a study of the original Winchester factory records on file at the Cody Firearms Museum, there were 72 part-round barreled model 1895’s produced, and this one is matted.

Winchester 1895 Deluxe Engraved Rifle .30 US s/n 31095 mfg 1901 - 28” round barrel; rare early pattern factory engraved receiver by Stokes (similar to a pattern pictured in the Madis book); fancy tiger-striped checkered walnut stocks with rubber shotgun buttplate. Receiver and magazine retain 40% original blue, balance patina; barrel retains 85% blue; stocks retain almost all of their original varnish finish. Stokes was a Winchester factory engraver from approximately 1887 to 1920. All of the features of this gun, including the engraving by Stokes, are verified by Madis letter.

Receiver and barrel retain 85% bright blue just starting to tone; lever retains about 40%; stocks retain all of their original varnish finish. Extremely rare deluxe ’95 with cheek piece and matted barrel. Includes authentication notes by the noted Winchester expert and historian, George Madis, describing the characteristics of this gun.

Winchester 1895 Special-Ordered Second Model Sporting Rifle .405 WCF s/n 53166 mfg 1905 – 24” round barrel; Marble 2S ivory bead front sight; MSA Co.-marked tang sight; straight grain walnut stocks with crescent buttplate. Period-mounted Malcolm Model #3 Target & Hunting Scope (with original dust caps), marked “Wm Malcolm / 3626 / 2” and is mounted in the original factory rear sight dovetail and side of receiver in the hole position for a Lyman receiver sight. Receiver retains 60% blue; barrel 95% bright blue; hammer retains 60% case colors; buttplate retains 50% case colors; stocks retain a high degree of their original finish with some handling marks minor dings and mars; markings are sharp; action is excellent; bore is bright.

Winchester 1895 Short Rifle/Carbine .30-06 s/n 398779 mfg 1920 – 24” round barrel; carbine buttstock, forend and hand guard w/o sight cutout; Lyman 41 receiver sight & high ramp front sight; no saddle ring. 99% bright blue finish remains; oil finished walnut stocks remain in excellent like-new condition. Gun was originally the property of the government of Monaco and used by national guards in that country. Includes authentication notes by the noted Winchester expert and historian, George Madis, describing the characteristics of this gun.

Carbine retains 50% original blue finish with the balance turning plum. Stocks retain almost all of their original varnish finish. Extremely rare deluxe '95 carbine.
