Here's something of interest. I posted about a possible pre-war 70 and neglected to mention the optics! When I first spied it on the rack with a scope on it, right away I thought of "extra holes" for the mounts which would have been really discouraging. Soon realized that the mount utilized the receiver sight holes already in place and the two holes on the front receiver ring. The mounts are marked U10 and U14, with the front ring on a base plate of sorts, attached to the rifle, and the ring attached to the plate. It had a Kollmorgen 4X Bear Cub (pre Stith and Redfield) and aside from the odd color of the scope (kind of a matte black, but several shades lighter than the rifle) made a nice package.

Interesting find Keith.

Would be nice if I could find an original scope for my 1951 JC Higgins model 28. Have been searching for years. No joy

I belong to a local gun collector club and one member has an odd assortment of accessories, including a closet full of vintage optics. What sort of scope are you looking for? I certainly wouldn't mind asking; he sells a lot of stuff on ebay and he always asks at every monthly meeting if anybody needs anything.

Would be an outstanding find indeed. Very rare optic. Need the mounts too.

saw one at a local gunshow last year. Does yours have the built-in retractable sling as well?

I believe the sing was with the model 31. No sling on mine. Fact is, the scope pic is a model 30 rifle. The scope fits several models. I check every gun show being several times each year. Also, pawn stores. Seems none exist. Perhaps a scope hoarder has them all.

Redryder, don't get too stoked up yet; I've talked to my fellow gunclub member and he thinks he might have a scope for your 28. He is retired military, first class machinist, and co-authored a reference book on Remington 700's, so he's pretty on top of things gun related. He works with a local scout council and repairs their camp guns and duch. There is a possibility that he put that scope on a scout gun in the past. I'll see him again next week and get back to you. Keep your fingers crossed!

Thanks for your effort Keith. Just maybe he has a match in his inventory. They are on eBay occasionally. However, I will NEVER use eBay or PayPal again in my lifetime.

Redryder! I hold in my hands the J.C. Higgins Rifleman 4X scope you are looking for! It has tge mount attached, plus red plastic scope caps. Neither me or my guy that had it have a clue as to value. Let me know by way of this forum (like an email address you don't mind giving out) and we'll make it happen! Gotta send you some joy.

I see you sent me a message but I don't have Messenger on my phone. My wife oversees the electronic stuff around here and frowns on my handing out my email address so I'm in a bit of a quandry. Get back with you this afternoon!

Your wife is right. She is security conscious. My secondary email is for web sites and those that just must have that blank filled-in. However, I seldom receive a SPAM.

No hurry for a reply. You did good and I'm sure the seller and I can agree on a fair price.

Show and tell time.

Keith and his scope guru came to my rescue with an original JC Higgins (Weaver) Rifleman 4X scope in excellent condition.
