I personally have never owned a Model 12...but have a friend who does and I've shot it on occasion.

It's a solid performer...

I told a friend last yr that i would take my m-12 that was built in 1953 and he could take any NEW shotgun and we could start shooting and i would take any bet that the old warhorse would still be goin after the new one jammed or broke. LOL no taker's by the way.

I don't own a 12. However, have never read a negative report on the 12. I would sure love to own one that was built shortly after the 97 was retired from production. Other than the 97's exposed hammer, not much difference in the models. Both were trusted by military and law enforcement.

Whoa..you take this pretty serious eh? If you have time some pics and descriptions of the vent rib features would be really nice. Which is the harder to find..2 or 3 pin? I mainly collect rimfires so please share your M12 collection.

Hawkeye.., that's great. I have 2 pins, 3 pins, rnd posts, rnd post/doughnut bases, as well as Simmons and love them all as well.

XLIV.. to answer you question, a nice 2 pin is a bit harder to find and a bit more desirable than a 3 pin. The 2 pin guns were all machined matched barrels and ribs, yes, the ribs were machined as well as the posts are solid to the barrel and not silver soldered like all the others. I still think the round post guns are a bit sexier and own 5 or 6 of those.

I do have an original round post/ doughnut base 3" that is like new. I built some exhibition montycarlo wood for it and removed the field wood which is flawless. I need to post some pics.

I have a 1917 12ga field grade with short barrel for a house gun and a 1913 16ga Field grade for rabbit hunting. Both are of course Mod 1912's rather than M 12's but they are still the same gun just a tad older.

I just purchased a model 12 that was manufactured in 1921. The gun has a Simmons rib and was also reblued by Simmons Gunsmithing. I've only had it for a week and am totally impressed with its shooting capabilities. It's at the gunsmith now for a new recoil pad. As someone who has lots of knowledge of these guns and based on the manufacturing year should I be concerned about any potential issues. I'm relatively a newbie when it comes to these type guns. Thank you...

Welcome Bigd !!

Hey...that M12 has been working since 1921...other than a good cleaning and some oil, you should be fine.

But...since it's already at the gunsmith...why not have him check it out.

Bigd,
Welcome aboard and I'm sure you'll own that shotgun for many a year with no problems. I will say that if you can find an extra firing pin to keep on hand and the only other things that might problem you are the springs on the action release bar (the button you push on the left underside to open it) and look for a couple extractor springs (2) one for each side of the bolt. If you look at the face of the bolt you'll see a circular ring around the firing pin. If that ring is centered on the firing pin your all good, but if it favors one side or the other that's the sign of a weak spring on the side it favors.
Now not to worry you'll probably never need any of these things but nice to have a few little extra parts if you needed them.
Good Luck shooting your Legend!

Pops

Oh BTW.. a little tip.. the shotgun was designed as a take-down. Avoid taking it apart a lot unless you have to, It has a take-up ring in the front barrel assembly and if you break it apart a lot the threads like to stretch a bit making it loosen up a bit.

I recently inherited a Winchester model 1912 in 20guage. I was told that the ones made in 1912 only came in 20 gauge. Is this true? It's a beautiful gun and has become one of my favorites. My local gunsmith says he's never seen one in such good condition condition. He also said it was invented by John browning. Is that true? It's serial # is 35343. It's marked nickel steel - Winchester - mod. 1912 - 20ga mod. What would the value be?

I replied in the new users sub-forum so won't regurgitate what I posted there. But start a new post with info and pics and hopefully we can help ya out some. Browning was influential in prior Winchester shotguns but T.C. Johnson I believe developed what was referred to as the "perfect repeater" and Winchesters first Hammerless pump shotgun.

Hi fellow M12 owners. I just joined the ranks after buying my first and only 16 ga Model 12 at a gun show yesterday. Still learning and only know relatively little bit about them after googling as much as I can about these great pump actions. Hope to learn more from folks on here.

Congrats on the Model 12 in 16 gauge you recently acquired! The Model 12 is by far my favorite pump action shotgun. Don't get me wrong I like the Model 1897 pump as well but the look and the lines of the hammerless Model 12 are timeless.

Post some pics of her in a new post so we can all enjoy Her! There is an old adage on many forums that says pics or it didn't happen  .

Great looking shotgun. The stock appears to be the proper length of pull even with the pad applied to it.
